Appendix C

Potlach Pageantry and Ceremony

Each Clan is allowed up to ten (10) minutes before competitions to perform their Clans’ songs, skits, dances, and symbolic sacrificial offerings to entertain spectators. Please note: no "sacrificial offerings" that represent the slaying of animals or people are acceptable. Potlaches celebrating successful Hunts may be continued after competitions are over, with time limits established by local league officials.  Local league officials are also encouraged to establish Potlach competitions.  Additionally, family members of Bearball players are permitted to participate in Potlach performances.

In order to create songs, skits, dances, and symbolic totems, interested individuals may research the following cultural topics in relation to aboriginal and tribal societies: pre- and post-hunting rituals, art, music, ceremonies, costumes, feasts, dances, holidays, gods, and instruments.  Other things to consider in preparation for performances are body painting and use of masks.  When developing performances, the Clan must keep in mind the space limitation of twenty (20) meter area.
